Comparing Lifting Beams And Spreader Bars For Roof Truss Installation

Roof trusses are necessary for the stability of a roof. However, it is equally important to install roof trusses safely and properly. One of the most important tools in this regard is rigging tools. This is primarily divided into two categories: lifting beams and spreader bars. In this blog, the differences between the two are explored in detail.

Lifting Beams vs. Spreader Bars

Lifting Beams

Lifting beams feature a single lifting point on the topside of the beam and two lifting points on the underside of the beam which is attached to the load to be lifted, in this case, a roof truss. The topside point is connected to a rigging device such as a crane or a hoist.

The heavy and rigid nature of lifting beams makes them ideal for flexible and fragile loads that need more support. Furthermore, more lifting points in the bottom half can be fabricated or added depending on the load. This makes it perfect for off-center loads or trusses with complicated geometry.

Spreader Bars

A spreader bar also features a long beam, but it is connected to a lifting sling at the top. A lifting sling is a material made of rope, chain or web sling and is connected to a crane or some other hoisting equipment. Therefore, instead of one lifting point like in the case of a lifting beam, a spreader bar features two lifting points at the topside. The bottom side can also feature two or more lifting points where the load is attached.

A spreader bar can be made with lighter and less expensive materials than a lifting beam. Moreover, since there are two lifting points at the top, it evenly distributes the stress of lifting a roof truss. Spreader bars are also known for offering great control and preventing instances of tipping, bending or sliding while installing roof trusses.
